How to custom a tin box?

You may often see various beautiful tin boxes in your life, such as chocolate tins, mini chewing gum metal boxes. As consumers, there is no necessity to know how they are made.  But if someday we need to purchase tin packaging for our products from an overseas factory, it is too important to know this. It can help us avoid the price, quality risk. This article will bring the complete tin box production process to your attention. From materials, molds to machines.

Step 1: Material: tinplate

  • The material of tin box is tinplate, which is a kind of slim steel plate electrolytic with tin. Also called SPTE. The most common thickness is 0.23mm. If our box is small, 0.21mm is also workable. But if very large, we may have to use 0.25mm or 0.28mm tinplate. The price of grade A tinplate is about $1000/ton, that is 2USD/m ².
  • Material tinplates always come in two kinds of forms, one is by roll, factories shear tinplates themselves. The other is by sheet. Material suppliers cut them according to tin factories' requirements before transport. See below picture.

Step 2: Choosing the suitable mold

  • Now we know that the material of tin boxes is tinplate. So what machines do we need to produce them? What else needed besides machines? What determines the size and shape of the metal box? Answers are below.
  • The machine for producing tin box is called punching machine. Besides this, molds are needed. It determines tins' size and shape. Which means each box corresponds to a unique set of molds. And each set of mold is consists of 8~20 parts, match the steps of tin box production. For example: If the molds group includes 8 parts, that means 8 steps needed to produce the tin box. Which is also one of the reasons why MOQ for custom tins is 3000pcs. The production is much complicated than paper box.
  • Meanwhile, the mold fee is not cheap, usually costs 3000USD ~7000USD. So in order to save this fee, our company provides 2000 existing molds for clients' choices. You only need to tell us the size and shape of tin box you want, normally we can find the same or similar mold for you.

Step 3: Prepare design/artwork

  • After choosing the mold, the customer needs to provide us the artwork which he wants to print on the tins.
  • There are two points we must note during this step. First: The format of artwork is preferably PDF, PSD, AI, CDR. Second: It is better to prepare the design according to drawings of tin box. Otherwise, some patterns may be lost during production. (The drawings will be provided by our engineer)

Step 4: Making samples for approval before mass production

  • Once the artwork is received, we will begin to make samples. After 12~15 days, your customized physical sample comes out.  You can check the quality and make any amendments at this stage.

Step 5: Mass production

  • After reaching agreement, the mass production processes will begin under strict quality control.
  • Usually, the output/day (8 hours) is between 5000 and 10, 000, more complex the structure of tin box, lesser the output. For example, daily output of irregular tins is less than round or square boxes.

Step 6: Inspection

  • Once tins finished punching, they will go through a 2-meter-long, 120-degree oven, to make the wax or accidentally glued machine oil on the surface easily fall off. Then it will be inspected one by one to see if there are any scratches, emboss deviation or other quality problems. Finally, all non-defective tins will be cleaned by non-dust cloth and alcohol, put in pp bag and cartons for transportation. 
  • You may wonder why there is wax on tin box. That's because sometimes some punching process can easily cause scratches. So in order to avoid this, we'll use some wax to protect them.
 

Step 7: Delivery

  • Tin packaging usually transports by sea. For some urgent orders, we can also arrange air-shipping.  Depend on the customers' requirement.
